The article explores into a case study involving a 5-year-old boy diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who underwent 26 sessions of Infra-Low Frequency (ILF) neurofeedback treatment over six months. This treatment aims to improve brain connectivity and information processing in individuals with ASD.

ASD, a developmental disorder affecting neural and mental development, is characterized by social communication impairments and repetitive behaviors. The disorder's complexity arises from genetic, environmental, and physiological factors influencing brain connectivity and processing.

ILF neurofeedback, a technique showing promise in altering brain connectivity, has been applied to ASD treatment. The case study illustrates the efficacy of ILF neurofeedback in reducing the severity of ASD symptoms across various categories such as physical, sleep-related, behavioral, and emotional symptoms. Notably, the treatment showed the strongest effect on physical and sleep-related symptoms, reducing their severity by 80% and 77%, respectively.

The treatment protocol involved EEG measurements and audio-visual feedback signals based on brainwave frequencies, targeting specific brain regions associated with ASD symptoms. The electrodes were placed strategically on the boy's scalp to address his reported symptoms.

The intervention resulted in notable improvements in the boy's behavior, including reduced hand-flapping, enhanced speech milestones, increased engagement in social activities, and improved sleep patterns. The initial right-sided training at temporal-parietal sites showed calming effects and improved sensory integration. Later, an additional frontal-temporal electrode placement aimed to enhance speech production and language development.

However, not all symptoms showed improvement, indicating variability in the treatment's impact across different ASD symptoms. Behavioral symptoms exhibited a lower reduction in severity (15%) compared to physical and sleep-related symptoms.

The study's findings suggest that ILF neurofeedback can be a practical and effective therapeutic approach for treating ASD in children, addressing a range of autistic behaviors and reducing developmental deficits. While this case study highlights promising results, further research, including controlled clinical studies, is necessary to better understand the treatment's mechanisms and its impact on specific ASD symptoms.

The case study's limitations include its focus on a single individual, warranting larger-scale studies for comprehensive validation. Nonetheless, the observed improvements in this case support the potential clinical effectiveness of ILF neurofeedback in treating ASD.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting both kids and adults, marked by issues like concentration and impulsivity. Medications, often stimulants like Ritalin or Adderall, help manage symptoms, but concerns about their impact on heart health have been raised. Research shows mixed findings: some studies link ADHD meds to potential cardiovascular risks, while others find no significant association. Factors like stimulant effects, individual health, treatment duration, and dosage may contribute to these risks. Despite potential concerns, ADHD meds offer significant benefits in improving life quality. Patients and healthcare providers should collaborate, discussing health history and concerns before starting or continuing medication. Regular cardiac monitoring, especially for those with existing heart conditions, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are recommended. While ongoing research explores this connection, informed decisions balancing risks and benefits should guide ADHD treatment.

Can't Sleep? Try Neurofeedback

Can't Sleep? Try Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback, a cutting-edge therapeutic technique, offers promising avenues for individuals struggling with sleep disorders. Sleep disorders, which encompass conditions like insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome, can wreak havoc on one's well-being and overall quality of life. Fortunately, neurofeedback presents an innovative and non-invasive solution to tackle these issues.

Neurofeedback, often referred to as EEG biofeedback, involves monitoring brain activity in real-time and providing feedback to help individuals gain control over their brainwave patterns. When it comes to sleep disorders, this technique can prove invaluable.

For instance, those suffering from chronic insomnia can benefit from neurofeedback sessions that aim to enhance the production of alpha brainwaves, associated with relaxation and sleep onset. By recognizing and rewarding the brain for achieving these states, individuals may find it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Similarly, neurofeedback can help those with sleep apnea by targeting the areas of the brain responsible for respiratory control and muscle tone. This training can potentially reduce apnea events and improve overall sleep quality.

Neurofeedback is a safe and non-pharmacological approach, making it especially appealing for those who wish to avoid medication. While further research is necessary, the potential for neurofeedback to revolutionize the treatment of sleep disorders is undeniable, offering hope for a restful night's sleep to countless individuals worldwide.

7 Ways the Gut affects Autism

The exact mechanisms through which the gut microbiome impacts autism are not fully understood, but there are several theories and findings that suggest a potential link.

Here are some ways in which the gut microbiome may influence autism:

           1. Gut-Brain Axis Communication

The gut and the brain communicate through a bidirectional pathway known as the gut-brain axis. The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in this communication by producing various neuroactive compounds and neurotransmitters that can affect brain function and behavior. Imbalances in the gut microbiome may disrupt this communication and contribute to ASD symptoms.

           2. Inflammation and Immune Function

            :

A dysregulated gut microbiome can lead to increased inflammation and altered immune responses. Chronic inflammation in the gut may trigger systemic inflammation, which has been linked to changes in brain development and function. Inflammation-related factors may contribute to the development or exacerbation of autism.

           3. Metabolite Production

Gut microbes metabolize dietary compounds and produce metabolites that can influence various physiological processes. Some of these metabolites have been associated with neurological development and function. Alterations in metabolite production by gut bacteria might play a role in autism pathogenesis.

           4. Gastrointestinal Symptoms

            :

Many individuals with autism experience gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). These GI issues could be linked to an imbalance in the gut microbiome. Furthermore, some studies suggest that improving gut health through diet or probiotics might lead to an improvement in ASD-related behaviors.

           5. Neurotransmitter Production

Gut bacteria can also impact the synthesis and metabolism of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which play essential roles in mood regulation and behavior. Altered levels of these neurotransmitters have been associated with autism.

           6. Genetic and Environmental Interactions

            :

Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of autism. It's possible that interactions between an individual's genetic predisposition and their gut microbiome composition could influence the risk or severity of autism.

           7. Antibiotic Use

            :

Early-life antibiotic exposure can disrupt the gut microbiome, especially during critical developmental periods. Some studies suggest a correlation between antibiotic use in infancy and an increased risk of autism.

It's important to note that the gut microbiome's impact on autism is likely to be complex and influenced by various individual factors. Further research is needed to better understand these relationships and develop potential therapeutic interventions targeting the gut microbiome to help individuals with autism.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that affects about 5-10% of school-aged children. The symptoms of ADHD, such as impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention, can have a significant impact on a child's academic and social functioning.

           What is Neurofeedback Therapy?

Neurofeedback therapy is a form of biofeedback that uses real-time electroencephalography (EEG) or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to help individuals regulate their brainwave activity. It is a non-invasive and gentle therapy.

The goal of neurofeedback therapy is to help the child learn to regulate their brain activity on their own, without the need for external feedback.

During neurofeedback sessions, the child has gel-attached electrodes gently placed on their scalp and that link them to a computer to monitor their brain activity. The child then watches the computer screen with a programme that catches their attention, for eg, a video. Through looking at the screen, they receive visual or auditory feedback that is meant to help them modify their brainwave patterns.

The treatment is generally 20-30 mins in duration.

The review in included studies published between 1990 and 2020 and included a total of 19 studies with a total of 807 participants. The results of the review showed that neurofeedback therapy was effective in improving symptoms of ADHD in children. The studies included in the review used a variety of neurofeedback protocols, such as theta/beta ratio, sensory-motor rhythm (SMR), and slow cortical potential (SCP) protocols. Despite the different protocols used, the studies consistently showed that neurofeedback therapy was associated with significant improvements in ADHD symptoms.

Specifically, the review found that neurofeedback therapy was associated with improvements in attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The improvements in ADHD symptoms were similar to those seen with traditional treatments, such as medication and behavioral therapy. Furthermore, the benefits of neurofeedback therapy were found to persist for up to 6 months after treatment.

It is important to note that the studies included in the review had some limitations. For example, many of the studies had small sample sizes, and some did not have control groups. Additionally, there was variability in the neurofeedback protocols used across studies, which makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions about the most effective protocol.

In conclusion, the results of this systematic review suggest that neurofeedback therapy is a promising alternative treatment for children with ADHD. While more research is needed to determine the most effective protocol for neurofeedback therapy, the studies included in this review provide evidence that this form of therapy can be an effective option for children with ADHD who are seeking non-pharmacological treatment options.

If you are considering neurofeedback therapy for your child, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider to determine if this form of therapy is appropriate for your child's individual needs.

The research examines the relationship between sleep deprivation and neurobehavioral functioning in children. The study concludes that sleep deprivation affects children's cognitive and behavioral performance, the executive functioning of the brain, resulting in symptoms such as reduced attention, slower reaction times, impaired memory, and difficulty with problem-solving. The study emphasizes the importance of adequate sleep in children for optimal neurobehavioral functioning. It suggests that parents, teachers, and healthcare providers should be aware of the potential impact of insufficient sleep on a child's development and academic performance.

The Temporal Dynamics of Brain-to-Brain Synchrony Between Students and Teachers Predict Learning Outcomes

Education is a fundamental pillar of our society, and its success largely depends on the quality of the interaction between students and teachers. Recent advances in neuroimaging techniques have allowed us to better understand the neural mechanisms underlying social interactions, including those between students and teachers. In a recent study published in Psychological Science, researchers explored the temporal dynamics of brain-to-brain synchrony between students and teachers and its impact on learning outcomes.

The study involved 32 teacher-student pairs who participated in a 20-minute teaching session. During the session, the teacher explained a complex scientific concept to the student while their brain activity was recorded using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), a non-invasive neuroimaging technique that measures changes in blood oxygenation in the brain. The researchers analyzed the data to identify the temporal patterns of brain-to-brain synchrony between the teacher and student.

The results showed that the level of brain-to-brain synchrony between the teacher and student varied over time, with periods of high and low synchrony. Interestingly, the periods of high synchrony were associated with better learning outcomes, as measured by a post-session quiz. Specifically, the degree of synchrony during the first five minutes of the session predicted the student's learning outcome, indicating that the early stages of the interaction are crucial for establishing a productive teacher-student relationship.

The researchers also found that the teacher's brain activity was more predictive of the student's learning outcome than the student's brain activity. This suggests that the teacher plays a more significant role in facilitating effective learning than the student. Additionally, the study found that the synchrony between the frontal and parietal regions of the brain was most predictive of learning outcomes, indicating that these brain regions are crucial for successful teacher-student interactions.

The findings of this study have important implications for education. They suggest that the quality of the interaction between students and teachers is crucial for successful learning outcomes, and that the early stages of the interaction are particularly important. The study also highlights the potential of neuroimaging techniques to provide insights into the neural mechanisms underlying social interactions.

In conclusion, the study sheds new light on the temporal dynamics of brain-to-brain synchrony between students and teachers and its impact on learning outcomes. The findings provide valuable insights into the neural mechanisms underlying successful teacher-student interactions and highlight the importance of establishing a productive relationship early on. These findings have the potential to inform the development of more effective teaching strategies that could improve learning outcomes for students.

Given that the air pollution in most countries have increased over time, there are various ways to prevent too much exposure, eg:

           - check pollution index before leaving the house. if the index is too high, remain indoors.

            - get an air purifier for your home and office.

           - wear a mask when painting or using hair spray.

           - invest in air-purifying plants such as snake plant, money plant, spider plant, and aloe vera, for your home and office.

           Abstract:

Identifying biomarkers for major depression is of high importance for improving diagnosis and treatment of this common and debilitating neuropsychiatric disorder, as the field seeks to move toward both personalized and more effective treatments. Here we focus on electroencephalography (EEG) or direct scalp voltage recordings as such a biomarker, with an emphasis on gamma and high gamma oscillations (or “rhythms”). In the last several decades, alpha and theta band rhythms have been found to provide information on depressive state as well as recovery, but the gamma band is less well characterized with respect to depression. We summarize some key findings on gamma rhythms (especially their amplitude) as a biomarker or endophenotype for major depression. These studies suggest: (1) under certain conditions gamma rhythms can distinguish subjects with major depression from healthy controls, (2) gamma may distinguish bipolar disorder from unipolar depression, (3) various pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments that counteract depression also alter gamma, (4) animal models of depression-like behavior show gamma abnormalities, with changes in gamma associated with therapeutic recovery. The most informative approaches in the future may combine profiles of gamma band power across the brain to assess ratios of activity across regions. Overall we have good evidence to suggest that gamma rhythms may provide objective information on major depressive disease status, but we will need further work to better define the precise measures to follow.

According to Sleep Foundation, Coronasomnia is characterized by an increase in sleep problems during the pandemic with symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. Traditionally, insomnia is often linked to anxiety and depression. However, the symptoms of Coronasomnia started during the pandemic. The reason being, loss of daily routine, too much media consumption, and the stressors were stated as "FED-UP".

During the Mental Health Week, SAP Asia hosted some zoom events for their staff on May 26, 2022. About 700 over participants attend the presentation on Mental Health, which covered statistics on global mental health, impact of covid on mental health, coping strategies and the effect of neurofeedback therapy, positive psychology, exercise and nutrition on brain health. From the feedback, it seems that more talks on mental health would be helpful during this ongoing pandemic.

Studies have found that covid 19 crisis had dramatically worsened the global mental health, reported, The Guardian. Cases of anxiety and depression around the world has increased in 2020 and the study also suggested that women and young people are more likely to be affected than men or older people.

Psychological improvements in patients with substance use disorders have been reported after neurofeedback treatment. However, neurofeedback has not been commonly accepted as a treatment for substance dependence. This study was carried out to examine the effectiveness of this therapeutic method for opiate dependence disorder. The specific aim was to investigate whether treatment leads to any changes in mental health and substance craving. In this experimental study with a pre-post test design, 20 opiate dependent patients undergoing Methadone or Buprenorphine maintenance treatment were examined and matched and randomized into two groups. While both experimental and control groups received their usual maintenance treatment, the experimental group received 30 sessions of neurofeedback treatment in addition. The neurofeedback treatment consisted of sensory motor rhythm training on Cz, followed by an alpha-theta protocol on Pz. Data from the general health questionnaire and a heroin craving questionnaire were collected before and after treatment. Multivariate analysis of covariance showed that the experimental group achieved improvement in somatic symptoms, depression, and total score in general mental health; and in anticipation of positive outcome, desire to use opioid, and relief from withdrawal of craving in comparison with the control group. The study supports the effectiveness of neurofeedback training as a therapeutic method in opiate dependence disorder, in supplement to pharmacotherapy.

Negative symptoms of schizophrenia, such as, decreased ability to express emotions, and inability to regulate self-initiated behaviors become prominent over time. With the use of neurofeedback therapy, there were obvious reduction of such symptoms enabling more social, interpersonal and improved mental processes. The results indicate that neurofeedback therapy may be further examined since it offers positively to existing treatment.

After Phase 2 (Heightened Alert), my presentation on Neurofeedback therapy and nutrition for the brain resumed on July 16, 21 with limited seats. This talk was focused on ADHD, dyslexia as well as stress and sleep management. Due to time constraints, two attendees managed to experience a 20-minute session of neurofeedback therapy, each. Even with a short session, one of them who had insomnia reported that she was able to sleep through the night, and felt less tension upon waking up.

Even though, the focus of the presentation was on neurofeedback therapy for developmental disorders, the Q & A session addressed questions on eating disorders. Over the last few years, I have been encountering more cases of eating disorders and was able to share with attendees on how neurofeedback therapy can help such clients. Targeted neurofeedback protocols were administered for obsessive compulsive behavior and anxiety, together with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) improved client's awareness of intrusive negative thoughts and change thought patterns to positive adaptive thoughts. During this session, I realised that parents of children with ED are helpless and searching for solutions and I am glad that I was able to give them hope during my sharing.

It was an honour to be invited to speak to EA of SAP Mental Health Day on 27 April.

The talk covered an interactive session of Positive Psychology by Dr Bhali Gill. At Dr Gill's session, I learnt what it takes to be positive and reframing negative thought patterns. The participants enjoyed her session with lots of jokes and laughter.

After tea break, I was invited to present on Neurofeedback therapy, an integrative approach to mental health and nutrition for the brain. What caught the attention of the participants was my sharing of how neurofeedback worked for my clients and discussion in the case studies.

Finally, two attendees decided to volunteer to be treated with neurofeedback therapy to improve sleep quality. Their brainwave was projected live on the the screen for everyone to look at and a light hearted discussion ensued on the dysregulation on the brainwaves. The volunteers were able to share their experience with everyone at the end of the session. The participants showed interest in my talk and some even registered for my next public talk on May 14.

Today's workshop was blast with knowledge, insights, hope and fun within the participating class.

I gave a talk on how Neurofeedback Therapy can improve Functioning and Self-regulation, and also the importance of Nutrition to the brain function. I also did a demonstration on two grown adults - one was looking for better sleep at night and other other was looking to destress her hectic lifestyle. I answered many questions during the Q&A section which helped reassured their doubts about neurofeedback. The Trial session enabled parents to experience the therapy so that they are confident to send their children for the sessions.

It was a fruitful day spent from the participants and myself too, for I'm passionate in helping others using Neurofeedback Therapy and Nutritional Supplementation to the brain.
